The Master\u2019s program \u201cFilm Culture: Archiving, Programming, Presentation\u201d \u2013 in the near future, \u201cFilm Culture: Archive, Program, Public\u201d \u2013 trains students for careers as academic staff and researchers in film and media archives as well as film culture institutions. It is the first program of its kind at a German university and is offered by Goethe University\u2019s Department of Theater, Film and Media Studies together with the DFF \u2013 Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum in Frankfurt am Main, in cooperation with the Arsenal Filminstitut (Berlin), the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, and the Kinothek Asta Nielsen. The program also incorporates courses from the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Linguistics, Cultures, and Arts.<\/p>\n
In addition to the various departments and archives of the DFF, the program benefits from a diverse, well-developed, and enduring network of partnerships with a wide range of cultural and audiovisual institutions located in the Frankfurt region. It also collaborates with numerous national and international bodies.<\/p>\n
The process of digitization has resulted in a fundamental transformation of all areas of research and practice in film culture. There is thus a clear demand from institutions for qualified academic staff with profound knowledge of film history and theory who can meet current challenges through critical thinking, long-term vision, and with the specific tools of the discipline.<\/p>\n
At the same time, we can presently observe an \u201canalog turn\u201d and, above all, a renewed engagement with the concept of the archive in artistic practice, as well as in long-term preservation and exhibition practices. Phenomena such as the archival preservation of the world\u2019s film heritage, the experimental use of film materials by curators and artists, and the presentation and circulation of moving images \u2013 both digital and analog \u2013 to publics whose configurations are themselves in motion, represent a field of tension and a significant challenge for work in film culture and academic reflection. This shifting landscape demands deep aesthetic and theoretical reflection on the role of the curator, commercial strategies and counter-strategies, copyright and licensing issues, as well as the overarching cultural practice of the exhibition.<\/p>\n
The program responds to the question of how smaller disciplines, which do not train students for teaching in schools, can support their graduates in their transition to professional careers as cultural producers, in cultural management, and the creative industries. Completing the program qualifies students for professional roles in public and private film and media archives, museums, and collections with an emphasis on film and audiovisual media; curatorial work in the field of film culture, including cinema and festival programming and film and media curation in museums, exhibition venues, and other institutions for the visual arts; and positions in companies within the film and media industry, such as production and distribution companies, streaming platforms, and broadcasters, including editorial work, programming, and media archiving. Further career options include journalism and film criticism, online editorial work, public relations, publishing,<\/b> and work for independent organizations and initiatives.
